Bathroom Waterproofing: The Part You Cannot See

October 14, 2026

You'll never see your bathroom's waterproofing once the tiles go on. You'll walk on it every day for the next twenty years without giving it a second thought, right up until the day it fails and you're pulling tiles off a wet subfloor.

This is the part of a bathroom renovation that decides whether it lasts.

What waterproofing actually does

Behind every tile, there's a membrane whose only job is to stop water getting into the structure of your home. Floors, walls around the shower, anywhere water can reach. If that membrane isn't applied properly, water finds its way through eventually. It's not a question of if, it's when.

Why it's the part that gets cut

Waterproofing is invisible the moment the tiler starts work. Nobody inspecting a finished bathroom can see whether it was done to standard, which makes it the easiest place for a rushed job to cut corners without anyone noticing straight away.

The problem shows up later, often years later, as a stain on a ceiling below, a soft spot in a floor, or grout that keeps failing no matter how many times it's redone.

What it costs to get wrong

We've pulled out bathrooms that were renovated a year or two before, done to code on paper but not underneath it, and had to redo the waterproofing from scratch. That's a full strip-out, twice, for one bathroom.

The homeowner didn't pay less the first time either. They paid a builder's price for a job that wasn't finished properly, then paid again to have it done right.

What proper waterproofing looks like

A licensed trade applies it to the relevant Australian Standard for wet areas and checks it before a single tile goes down. Once it's covered, there's no going back to check it, so it has to be right the first time.

Ask any builder quoting your bathroom how they handle waterproofing, and whether it's a line item you can actually see in the quote. If the answer is vague, that's worth noticing.

What we do

Waterproofing is never a step we skip past to get to the visible finishes faster. It's checked, it's done to standard, and it's one of the reasons a bathroom we build is still working hard a decade later.

If you're comparing quotes and want to know what's really behind the tiles, ask us. It's a conversation worth having before any work starts, not after.
